Living room concert

Exclusive Living Room Concert with female throat singer!

Get carried away by the ancient sounds of Mongolia. Throat singing, traditional instruments and extraordinary musical stories, performed by three exceptional artists who come to the Netherlands especially for this project.

A rare and intimate musical experience

On Thursday evening, January 22, Altai will open its doors for a special living room concert with three exceptional musicians from Mongolia. No big hall, no distance; but a warm, personal evening where you can play the music up close experiences. Note: Limited number of tickets available! Acoustic, pure, and deeply connected to ancient traditions.

This evening's main guest is D. Zolzaya, one of Mongolia's very few professional female throat singers. Together with professional musicians Yesun and Khulan, who have been sharing their music from Mongolia in Europe for 15 years, they bring traditional Mongolian songs, throat singing and instrumental music to life in a way that is rarely heard in Europe.

Expect an enchanting mix of khömii (throat singing), overtones, morin kuur (horse-headed violin), tovshuur (lute), yaga (harp), flute, mouth harp and more.

A welcoming Altai-style evening

As usual in Mongolia, hospitality is key. We'll welcome you with traditional milk tea and small Mongolian treats, right in our living room! Before and after the concert, there is an opportunity to speak to the artists, ask questions or see an instrument up close.

This evening is part of a very rare cultural tour by artist Zolzaya in Europe — a unique opportunity to experience Mongolia's rich musical traditions in a private and atmospheric living room setting.

Who makes this possible?

Saran Myagmarsuren
Host @ Altai

Saran grew up in rural Mongolia, surrounded by the country's traditions, rituals, and rich culture. After moving to the Netherlands in 2002, she continued to cherish her Mongolian roots. In 2014, she married Rowan, and together they are working on their shared dream: introducing Mongolian culture and hospitality to the Netherlands through their concept. Altai.

Rowan Hartsuiker
Host @ Altai

At the age of 17, around 2006, Rowan fell under the spell of music from Mongolia. He soon travelled to Mongolia to further explore the country and culture. Since then, Mongolian music and traditions have become an integral part of his daily life. In 2014, he married Saran, and together they have been working on their dream ever since: sharing Mongolian culture and music in the Netherlands through their concept Altai.

Zolzaya
Guest musician from Mongolia

Zolzayaa is a talented Mongolian throat singer from Khovd, one of the few female professional throat singers in Mongolia. She works at the Drama Theatre in Ulaanbaatar and plays various traditional instruments, including the mouth harp, overtone flute, ikel, morin khuur and tovshuur. After graduating from the Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture (SUIS), she worked to preserve the Mongolian throat singing tradition. She has taught over 400 children and continues to share her knowledge locally and online.

Yesun & Khulan
Musicians from Mongolia

Yesun and Khulan are experienced Mongolian musicians who share their passion for traditional music around the world. Yesun studied Mongolian folklore, music and singing in Ulaanbaatar and has been performing as a soloist and ensemble member from Bremen, Germany since 2013. Khulan, who grew up in a musical family, started playing the yatga (zither) and Morin Khuur (horse-headed violin) at an early age.
