Throat Singing Workshop

Weekend workshop “Tuvan Throat Singing & Overtones”

Extra special: A unique focus on throat singing, overtones and music from Tuva, accompanied by no less than three experienced supervisors: Frodi, Hidde and Rowan. Together, they bring their extensive knowledge of throat singing, overtones and traditional music from Tuva and Mongolia.

Discover the magic of Tuvan throat singing and music

Are you curious about overtone singing and Tuvan throat singing? Tuva, a republic in Russia just north of Mongolia, is known for these unique vocal arts. During this special weekend workshop, you will discover the techniques behind these forms of singing in a relaxed and inspiring environment. We invite you to sing, make music, learn and enjoy the rich cultures of Mongolia and Tuva together.

This is a very unique opportunity to immerse yourself in these art forms, accompanied by no less than three experienced singers: Frodi, musician and throat singer with an official Tuvan award for a specific throat singing technique; Hidde, young but very talented and fascinated by Tuvan throat singing; and Rowan, with 20 years of experience in Mongolian throat singing, instruments and culture. Curious about what such a weekend looks like? Read it in our blog post ”Experience the magic of Throat Singing & Overtones in a Weekend Workshop

The program in a nutshell

On Saturday, we welcome you with a cup of traditional milk tea at 1pm. The first workshop starts around 2 p.m., where you'll discover the basics of overtones and throat singing. After a delicious traditional dinner, the second workshop follows in the evening. Afterwards, there is time to relax, play music or, in good weather, enjoy an atmospheric campfire.

On Sunday morning, we start with a traditionally inspired breakfast, followed by a walk on our neighbor's beautiful estate, where the third workshop takes place (or inside, in case of worse weather). After lunch, we'll end the afternoon with a final workshop to bring together and deepen everything you've learned.

A weekend of music, culture and inspiration!

Who makes this possible?

Rowan Hartsuiker
Host @ Altai

At the age of 17, around 2006, Rowan fell under the spell of music from Mongolia. He soon travelled to Mongolia to further explore the country and culture. Since then, Mongolian music and traditions have become an integral part of his daily life. In 2014, he married Saran, and together they have been working on their dream ever since: sharing Mongolian culture and music in the Netherlands through their concept Altai.

Saran Myagmarsuren
Host @ Altai

Saran grew up in rural Mongolia, surrounded by the country's traditions, rituals, and rich culture. After moving to the Netherlands in 2002, she continued to cherish her Mongolian roots. In 2014, she married Rowan, and together they are working on their shared dream: introducing Mongolian culture and hospitality to the Netherlands through their concept. Altai.

Frodi Fransman
Guest musician

Frodi became fascinated by Tuva's throat singing at an early age. He is very talented in various throat singing techniques and even received an official award at a Tuvan throat singing festival in 2020. As a musician, he also experiments with combining throat singing and modern music.

Hidde Meenhorst
Guest musician

Hidde was inspired by Tuvan music and throat singing. Despite his young age, he is an exceptional talent and plays an extensive repertoire of traditional Tuvan songs.
