Experience the magic of Throat Singing & Overtones in a Weekend Workshop

Last weekend Throat Singing & Overtones this year was another success! A warm, fun and educational experience for everyone who is curious about these special singing techniques. Have you always wanted to discover what your voice can do? Or do you want to learn more about the cultural background of throat singing and overtones? Then come to our next Throat Singing & Overtones weekend workshop!

What does a weekend like that look like? In a small, personal setting, we take you into the world of overtone singing and various throat singing techniques. You'll discover how these singing traditions are intertwined with the culture of Central Asia and enjoy delicious (plant-based) traditional Mongolian meals, a nice stay and inspiring workshops.

Like a previous participant, Meike Klomp, summarized it nicely:

“A great experience to be immersed in Mongolian culture. What hospitality and expert guidance!”

A look at the weekend:

Upon arrival, you will meet the other participants, usually a small group of 4 to 8 people. This personal approach creates a relaxed atmosphere where everyone feels at home. While enjoying a cup of coffee, tea or even a traditional Mongolian milk tea, there is room to land and get to know each other. Although we don't know each other, we already share an interest: exploring the unique world of throat singing and overtones. In any case, that's all right!

The first workshop offers a broad introduction to the world of throat singing music. You'll learn about the origins of throat singing and discover that this song form is not only found in Mongolia but also in other countries, even here in Europe! Then you get to work with your own voice: how can you discover overtones in your voice and use them to sing melodies? It's a surprising and fascinating experience to discover how to use your voice in such a different way.

After the workshop, you'll enjoy a traditional Mongolian meal lovingly prepared by Saran. This is the time to take a break, share experiences and enjoy the flavors of Mongolia.

Fanny van der Horst, an enthusiastic participant, said:

“In an atmospheric Mongolian atmosphere, I learned the basics of throat singing. Rowan and Saran are extremely hospitable, and the structure of the workshops was clear and inspiring. It really makes you feel like you're in Mongolia — highly recommended!”

Discovering various throat singing techniques

During the second workshop, we dive into the first real throat singing technique. Rowan guides the group and also takes the time to practice one-on-one with you. This gives you the chance to receive personal advice and further refine your skills. In between exercises, Rowan sings traditional Mongolian songs, accompanied by the Altai harp, horse-headed violin or tovshuur. Experiencing this music live is just as educational as practicing it yourself!

In the evening, there is time to relax. Depending on the season/weather, we can also sit outside with a campfire. Try one of the traditional instruments yourself (with instructions from Rowan), read a book, or just take the time to relax. Above all, pretend to be at home!

The overnight stay, as well as meals and all workshops, is of course included in the price. It is quite possible that you share a room with another participant. However, if you come as a duo, couple or trio, we will make sure you get a room together. We always do everything we can to offer everyone a comfortable place to sleep. Our farm guesthouse has two separate bedrooms, a cozy box bed in the living room and an attractive yurt as extra sleeping space.

No doubt you'll also get to know our Raven over the weekend. The wolf, who is actually secretly just a dog:) - This friendly giant always enjoys all the attention!

Jan van der Wijk described his experience as follows:

“I've discovered new possibilities for my voice thanks to Rowan's thorough instructions and personal attention. The homely atmosphere and delicious food made it complete. An unforgettable experience!”

The next morning

The day begins with a traditional Mongolian breakfast. Depending on the weather, we will then start with a leisurely walk on our neighbor's beautiful estate or immediately with the third workshop. In the third workshop, it is time to discover a second throat singing technique. Rowan combines practical exercises with inspiring stories and demonstrations so that you not only learn but also understand how these singing traditions are intertwined with daily life in Mongolia.

like Angelique van Breemen it said:

“Clear lessons, a warm atmosphere and a hospitable welcome. Rowan and Saran will really take you to Mongolia. Highly recommended for anyone who is curious about this unique art of singing!”

Replay and end of the weekend

During the last workshop, we'll repeat everything you've learned. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions and deepen your knowledge and technique. Indeed, participants discover that “throat singing” is not just one technique, but a collection of singing styles that each have their own strength.

After the closure, there is time to exchange experiences, say goodbye and possibly make plans for a sequel. You'll get a little gift to take home, a reminder of an inspiring weekend full of music, culture and connection.

A weekend you'll never forget! Do you want to experience this too?
