The Power of the Female Voice

In several multi-day workshops (4-day retreat in Groningen NL, 1-day workshop in Switzerland and a 2-day workshop in Finland), we dive deep into the world of Mongolian throat singing. One of the most frequently asked questions is: Can women learn throat singing too? Many people, when hearing the deep, resonant tones of Mongolian throat singing, assume it is something only men can do.Yet many female artists from Mongolia, Tuva, and Buryatia prove otherwise – among them Zolzayaa, originally from Khovd in Western Mongolia.With her remarkable range and finesse, she shows that throat singing is not about physical power, but about a subtle balance of breath, resonance, and inner harmony.

The workshops are fully inclusive – with accommodation, meals, and multiple sessions per day led by Zolzayaa, assisted by Rowan.

The second part of this project is dedicated to sharing Zolzayaa’s music and talent with the public. As a female throat singer born in Chandmani Sum (Khovd, Western Mongolia) – a region often regarded as the birthplace of Mongolian throat singing – she represents a new generation keeping this ancient art alive.During her performances, Zolzayaa takes audiences on a musical journey through Mongolian songs, throat singing, and traditional instruments.

She is a skilled player of the tsuur (flute from Western Mongolia), the tovshuur (two-stringed lute), the morin khuur (horsehead fiddle), and the mouth harp.
Through her music and stories, she brings the power of female expression within an ancient tradition to life.
